Waterfront Park Phase II
Phase II of Waterfront Park opened to the public in June 2004. Construction
began on this phase of the park on August 1, 2001, which is located
east of the existing 55-acre first phase.
Phase II, approximately 17 acres, starts east of the Big Four Bridge
and extends west to about the middle of Towhead Island (see map
above). It includes the popular Adventure Playground and a fun area
for waterplay, which opened in July 2003; a plaza for an informal
café; an amphitheater; docks for pleasure boaters; an area
for a school and community rowing center; and additional picnic
and lawn areas, tree groves, and walking paths.

Raising is Underway for Phase III
The centerpiece of Phase III is the Big Four Bridge as a walkway
across the river. Phase III also includes a continuation of the
tree groves, meadows, picnic areas and walking paths of Linear Park.
Phase III construction started in September 2005 and should be completed
in 2011.
Waterfront Park has enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim.
The park averages more than 1.5 million visitors per year. Its design
has been lauded both nationally and internationally and has won
a number of national awards, including the U.S. E.P.A.'s Phoenix
Award, the most prestigious environmental award given, and several
awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, the leading
organization for the profession.
