8th Annual WFPK Waterfront Wednesday Concert Series
First concert of the series will take place one week early
Louisville, KY - Louisville’s favorite concert seriesis set to begin on Wednesday April 22, 2009. The WFPK Waterfront Wednesday® Concert Series is a monthly free concert on the Harbor Lawn in Louisville Waterfront Park. The concerts will take place on the last Wednesday of every month, May through September. The April event is moved one week early to April 22 to avoid conflict with the Kentucky Derby Festival Activities.
The Waterfront Development Corporation (WDC) and WFPK first partnered in 2002 to produce an innovative concert series that was free and showcased local and emerging national recording artists as heard on radio station 91.9 WFPK. Each concert attracts large audiences to mingle, dance and enjoy the river. They also enjoy a family-friendly park atmosphere, free admission, a cash bar and upscale festival fare. Last year’s attendance grew to an average of 3,500+ per concert, with the July event exceeding 6,000 people.
The April 22 WFPK Waterfront Wednesday® concert is sponsored by Commonwealth Bank and Trust Company, Goose Island Brewing Company, Maker’s Mark and Friends of the Waterfront, and will feature Todd Snider, Extra Golden and Tony Furtado.
“Todd Snider is a true songwriter, with the heart and humor of John Prine, the wild unpredictability of Roger Miller, and a fresh, original spirit and freedom of imagination that's absolutely his own” – Kris Kristofferson
“As comically surefooted as Snider is on his recordings, even he can’t compete with his stage persona, where he digresses between songs, sometimes at great length, always with great humor.” – The New Yorker, Ben Greenman
Extra Golden is Kenyan benga music and American rock fully integrated in a union that represents the vanguard of both styles. “Extra Golden is doing more than making gorgeous music; they're pouring the foundation for one more cross-cultural bridge, a gesture of paramount importance.” – Global Rhythm
There are plenty of reasons to get there early on the 22nd, not the least of which is Tony Furtado. His show has something to offer everyone. His impressive, furious slide guitar skills and 25+ years of banjo experience will blow away the music geeks; for the lovers of a story in a song, Furtado has a few tales to tell; and to those who are looking for a performance, get ready to be captivated, charmed, and entertained.
The Harbor Lawn is located between the boat docks at the Great Lawn and the Children’s Play Area. Parking is available along River Road, the Orange Lot, and surrounding pay lots. The event begins at 5pm. No outside alcohol, no glass and please, no pets. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcomed.
